Jordan

Our work in Jordan

  • Supporting refugees
  • Discipleship and Bible teaching

A land locked country in the Middle East, Jordan is surrounded by Israel, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. It is separated from Egypt by the Gulf of Aqaba. Most of the country is desert, and the population is concentrated on the banks of the River Jordan, which flows along the western border. The capital city is Amman.

Jordan was part of the Turkish Empire until 1918, and then under British rule until independence in 1946. It is now ruled by King Abdullah II, who has implemented reforms which have contributed to the country’s stability.

In recent years, Jordan has been pressured by large influxes of refugees escaping the conflicts in Syria and Iraq. There is also a large number of Palestinians living in exile in Jordan, and Kuwaitis who were displaced in the first Gulf War.

In February 2019, the population was approximately 10 million, 67% of whom live in urban areas. This, however, is misleading: Zataari, the largest camp for Syrian and Iraqi refugees, has a population of 79,000, making it the fourth largest city in the country by population. 20% of the people living here are under 5 years old.

35% of the population as a whole is under 15 years old.

The state religion is Sunni Islam, but the constitution prevents religious discrimination, and promotes freedom of worship. The Christian Church has a public and open presence, although evangelical Christians are sometimes put under pressure.

The people of Jordan are poor, and more than 80% of them live below the international poverty line, which means they have an income of less than US$1.90 per day. Life expectancy is good, at 74 years, and there are 13.3 infant deaths per 1000 live births.

The country’s income sources include tourism, phosphates and agricultural products. Jordan has no oil, and little water.

Projects in Jordan that need support include:

  • Support for refugees from Iraq and Syria
  • More children need sponsoring
  • Bibles for students of theology
