Why Hope School in Goma Needs Protection – Your Questions Answered

What and where is the need?

Hope School is in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo — a region currently facing severe unrest. In April, the school was attacked, and several children were injured. To protect the students and staff, there’s now an urgent need for on-site security.

Why is this a pressing need now?

The school has already been targeted. The area remains unstable, and without continued protection, children and teachers are still at risk. We’ve managed to get 24-hour guards in place — but we need help to keep them there.

Why are WIN best placed to tackle this need?

We have an established relationship with the local partner running the school, have been providing regular support for students, and have immediate communication channels in place.

What will be the benefits of your work?

Security guards will provide immediate protection for around 390 children and their teachers, allowing education to continue without fear. It brings stability, peace of mind, and a safer future for everyone at the school.

What is the impact if we don’t do this now?

If we can’t keep the security in place, the school may be forced to close — leaving nearly children without education or protection. The risk of further violence remains high, and without urgent support, students and staff could once again be in danger.

Children have already been hurt. No child should fear going to school. This is a chance to stand with a vulnerable community and help protect innocent lives.

How do you ensure success and accountability?

We’ve vetted the security company and have a clear contract in place. We stay in regular contact with our local partner and monitor the situation closely to ensure transparency and accountability.

How much does it cost?

It costs just $250 a month to provide 24-hour protection — that’s two trained security guards watching over the school. We’re aiming to raise $3,000 to cover one year of security.
