What did you want to be when you grew up? An engine driver? Footballer? Nurse or doctor? All children have an idea of their perfect job. Some never change their minds and go on, single-mindedly working towards their goal. Others decide to do something else instead.
Whatever your career, it will have involved study, whether to get the qualifications to be considered, or to go through basic training, for improved promotion prospects or better income. And it all began with school.
Prospective employers want to know about your school days. Your academic achievements open doors for you, affecting your entire life. Even if you hated every minute of it at the time, you come to be grateful when you’re older.
So imagine being a child who knows and understands the world an education can bring, but who has to stand outside the school gates, frustrated because you can’t come in. A child with a quick brain and a lively intelligence who will, nonetheless, never be able to read and write, and never be eligible for your dream job, simply because you are poor.
That nightmare is a reality for too many children.
At World In Need, we believe education is a right that should be enjoyed by every child. It certainly should not be denied because of money.
When a child is sponsored through World In Need, they are able to go to school and reach for their dreams. In the past, our children have qualified as motorbike mechanics, doctors, nurses, teachers, air conditioning engineers and accountants. One even became our representative in Uganda, passing on hope to a whole new generation.
These children could not have succeeded without their sponsors.
Supporting a child costs £22 a month. For that, you can expect letters and pictures from your child a couple of times a year, school reports and, best of all, the chance to help a child be all they can be.
