What and where is the need?
The city of Goma, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is currently experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis. Recent escalations in conflict have led to massive displacements, with hundreds of thousands fleeing their homes and seeking refuge in and around Goma. This influx has strained existing resources, leading to acute shortages of food, clean water, and essential supplies.
Why is this a pressing need now?
The recent surge in violence, particularly the capture of Goma by M23 rebels on January 28, 2025, has disrupted economic activities and essential services. Residents are struggling to access basic necessities and are facing dire water and sanitation conditions, heightening the risk of disease outbreaks
Why are WIN best placed to tackle this need?
World in Need has an established presence in Goma through our support of Hope School. Our existing relationships with the children, staff, and the broader community position us to effectively identify needs and deliver aid promptly.
What will be the benefits of your work?
Providing emergency relief will ensure that affected families receive essential food, clean water, and hygiene supplies. This intervention will help prevent malnutrition, dehydration, and the spread of waterborne diseases, thereby stabilizing the community during this crisis.
What is the impact if we don’t do this now?
Failure to act promptly may result in increased mortality due to hunger, malnutrition, and disease outbreaks such as cholera. The already vulnerable populations, especially children, are at heightened risk without immediate support.
Why should people care about this?
The humanitarian crisis in Goma is a matter of global concern. Supporting this emergency appeal aligns with our shared values of compassion and solidarity, ensuring that innocent lives are protected and dignified during their time of need.
How do you ensure success and accountability?
We will work directly with trusted people on the ground, who know the situation best and can use their judgment to distribute aid where it is most needed. Claudaline will withdraw funds in Kinshasa, and the funds will be transferred via mobile money to the office team in Goma. The team will purchase food, water, and/or other essential supplies and distribute them directly to those in need. We will not be handing money directly to recipients. Regular updates (including photographs of items being distributed) will be provided and, if possible, receipts will be obtained to ensure transparency.
How much does it cost?
There is no set target.
