Global Family Spotlight - Meet Pastor Robert

A Life of Faith and Service in Kenya

Having spent time living in both the United States and the United Kingdom, Pastor Robert Mulumbi felt a clear calling to make his home and serve in Kenya. In the rural village of Soy, that calling has grown into a ministry bringing together education, church leadership and practical care for families.

Robert has been part of World in Need’s Global Family since 1998. Known for his faith, integrity and humility, he leads Nancy George Academy, oversees six churches and helps equip Christian leaders through the Soy International Bible Institute.

At the heart of these responsibilities is a commitment to the people of his community: helping children learn, encouraging families and supporting people as they grow in their Christian faith.

Helping children build a future

Robert founded Nancy George Academy to serve the local community and give children access to education in an area where opportunities can be limited. Today, the primary and junior secondary school serves around 450 children.

The Academy’s purpose reaches beyond preparing pupils for examinations. Alongside their academic studies, children are encouraged to develop confidence, character and a sense of purpose. Practical learning, school assemblies and Christian values are all part of helping them prepare for life beyond the classroom.

As demand for places has grown, the school has adapted, making use of classrooms from the nearby Bible school to accommodate more pupils. This reflects both the community’s need for education and the challenge of providing enough space and resources.

According to the school’s project profile, just 45 of its approximately 450 pupils currently have sponsors. Sponsorship remains an important way to help make education accessible to children from some of the most vulnerable families in the area.

Equipping others to serve

Alongside his work with children, Robert founded the Soy International Bible Institute, which offers certificate, diploma and degree-level theological training for church leaders and Christian workers. His ministry also includes a discipleship course for those who are new to the Christian faith, helping them understand the Bible and grow in their relationship with Jesus. Through this work, Robert is investing in people who will go on to serve others. Training and mentoring local leaders helps strengthen churches and supports the communities around them. As the pastor overseeing six churches, he also provides pastoral care, encouragement and practical support to families facing both spiritual and everyday challenges.

Family and faithful service

Robert’s story is also a family story. He and his late wife, Alice, raised four children together. In 2024, he married Terri, whose two adult children became part of their blended family. Together, Robert and Terri continue to serve and support their community. His connection with World in Need stretches back more than two decades. Throughout that partnership, his ministry has brought together the sharing of Christian faith and practical opportunities for children and families. For us at World in Need, Robert’s work reflects why locally led ministry matters. He knows the community, understands its challenges and has committed his life to serving there.

Standing alongside Robert

Please pray for Robert and Terri, the teachers and pupils at Nancy George Academy, and the church leaders being trained through the Bible Institute. Pray for wisdom and strength as Robert leads these ministries, and for the resources needed to support the school as demand continues to grow. If you would like to help a child access education through Nancy George Academy, please contact World in Need to find out about sponsorship. Your support can help Robert and his team continue serving the children and families of Soy.
