Frishta urgently needs a working water supply
What and where is the need?
Frishta Children’s Home in rural Punjab, India, provides a safe and caring home for nine boys. The home is not connected to a public water supply and depends entirely on a tube well—a deep borehole and pump—for its daily water needs.
The tube well has stopped providing water. Its rusted and mismatched pipes must be replaced, the electrical cable upgraded, and the pump lowered to reach the falling water level.
Why is this a pressing need now?
Frishta currently has no working water supply of its own. The home is temporarily borrowing water from a neighbour’s tube well and paying for both the water and the electricity needed to pump it.
This arrangement cannot be relied upon indefinitely. Urgent repairs are needed to restore a dependable supply for the children and staff.
Why are WIN best placed to tackle this need?
World In Need has supported Frishta Children’s Home for many years and works directly with its leadership. This established relationship allows us to respond quickly and ensure that the funds reach the local team responsible for arranging the repairs.
What will be the benefits of your work?
Restoration of Frishta’s independent water supply
Reliable water for the children’s and staff’s daily needs
An end to the home’s dependence on a neighbour’s well
Stronger, more durable pipework suitable for the pump
A deeper pump position to help cope with future changes in the water level
Reduced risk of another costly repair in the near future
What is the impact if we don’t do this now?
Frishta will remain without a water supply of its own and dependent on a temporary arrangement with its neighbour. If that water becomes unavailable, essential daily life at the home will be severely disrupted.
Delaying the work could also allow the condition of the system to deteriorate further and increase the eventual repair cost.
Why should people care about this?
Water is one of life’s most basic needs. The nine boys at Frishta should not have to live with uncertainty over something so essential.
This is a practical, achievable repair that will make an immediate difference and provide greater security for the whole home. By giving, supporters can help restore something the children and staff depend upon every single day.
How do you ensure success and accountability?
WIN is in direct communication with Frishta’s leadership and has received a detailed breakdown of the required work.
The repairs will be undertaken locally by specialists. WIN will remain in contact throughout the work and request invoices, photographs and progress updates to ensure that donated funds are used for their intended purpose.
How much does it cost?
The initial estimate was ₹73,000. However, once the pipework was removed, the damage was found to be more extensive than expected. The latest estimate is up to ₹90,000 - ₹100,000 —approximately £689-£765 at the time of writing.
We are aiming to raise ÂŁ765 to meet the repair costs and allow for exchange-rate changes and transfer expenses.
The work will include replacement pipework, a camera survey of the borehole, removal and reinstallation of the pump, upgraded electrical cable, additional pipework and essential fittings.
