The DRC, formerly the Belgian colony of Zaire, is a landlocked country which takes up much of the area of Central Africa. The country is about 2/3 the size of western Europe, and is home to 85 million people. The capital is Kinshasa, in the west.

46% of the population is under 15 years of age. Life expectancy is 59 years, and there are 70 infant deaths for every 1000 live births.

There has been freedom of religion since 1980, since when many social, health and education services have been maintained by Christian churches.

The DRC is rich in deposits of gold, diamonds, and minerals such as coltan, which provides the tantalum necessary for mobile phones and other electronic devices. Coltan sells for US$100 a kilo, and has been priced much higher. Instead of enriching the country and its people, the value of coltan and other deposits have frequently caused conflict, with different factions, both from inside the country and from neighbouring states, fighting to control the supply.

These conflicts have been vicious, and have caused more deaths than any other conflict since World War Two. All sides have used rape as a weapon of war, and in 2010, the DRC was called “the rape capital of the world.” Children as young as three months have been violated, and at the height of the violence, some 48 women were raped every hour.

The incidence of HIV/AIDS is high. In some cases, soldiers and militia men known to have the virus were sent specifically to infect women.

Thousands of children have been born of rape, some to mothers as young as ten years old. They, and their mothers, often face shunning by family and communities.

We have a number of projects in DRC that need support:

  • We need to increase all ministries

  • Funding for a weekly nurse

  • Expansion of school

  • Expansion of 245 feeding program

  • Well project at the farm cooperative

Child sponsorship is an amazing opportunity to transform the life of someone worse off than you.  We often find it also results in a life changing experience for the giver too!  Please complete the form below and we’ll connect you with your sponsored child in the Democratic Republic of Congo…
