Our work in India

  • Supporting boys and girls from poor families
  • After school care for low income families
  • Home for girls where they can grow up safe
  • Sponsoring children
  • Resources for deaf children and adults

This south Asian country forms most of the Indian subcontinent. It’s the second most populous country in the world, with 1.3 billion people. 28% of these are under 15 years of age. Life expectancy is 68 years and the infant mortality rate is 34 deaths per 1000 live births.

The country is a federal republic, made up of 29 states and 7 union territories. It became independent from Britain in 1947, and is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The capital city is New Delhi, and the official languages are Hindi and English, though a further 18 languages have more than 10 million speakers each.

There is freedom of religion, enshrined in law, though 80% of the population is Hindu. Christians account for 2.3% of the people.

India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, largely thanks to the service sector, which accounts for 55.6% of jobs. 26% of people are employed in industry and a further 18% in agriculture. Agricultural products are varied and include wheat, rice, oilseed, cotton, jute, tea, sugarcane and potatoes. Major industries include textiles, telecommunications, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

However, there is still great poverty. 21% of the population live below the international poverty line, which means they live on less than US$1.90 per day. 15% of the population is undernourished, and 30% of children under 5 are underweight.

As well as this, there are problems with forms of modern slavery. 18.3million people are living in this state, through bonded labour, child labour, human trafficking and forced begging.

We have a number of projects in India that need support:

  • Asha Bhavan home for girls needs support
  • More children need sponsoring
  • Expenses for after school club need to be covered
  • Equipment needed to help deaf people achieve their potential
  • Help with school costs for children from low income families

Child sponsorship is an amazing opportunity to transform the life of someone worse off than you.  We often find it also results in a life changing experience for the giver too!  Please complete the form below and we’ll connect you with your sponsored child in India…
