Hope in Goma

March 31, 2025

How Your Support is Changing Lives

Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), remains under the control of the M23 rebel group, which seized the city in late January. The situation is precarious, with significant humanitarian and security concerns.

Over 660,000 people were displaced from temporary collective sites in Goma and the outskirts of Nyiragongo territory between January and February 2025. Those returning to areas such as Sake have encountered devastated infrastructure, destroyed homes, and a lack of essential services like clean water and electricity. The scarcity of resources has resulted in acute hunger, with a record number of people facing food insecurity across the DRC.

Bringing Relief to the Most Vulnerable

At World In Need, our mission is to bring hope, relief, and transformation to communities affected by hardship. Thanks to the generous donations of our supporters, we have been able to start making a real difference for families suffering from this ongoing conflict.

In March, we partnered with our Global Family member Claudaline Muhindo to deliver much-needed food assistance to families affected by the violence. World In Need, has so far been able to provide essential food items to 50 families - 351 people in total - who were in dire need.

What Your Donations Provided

With careful planning and efficient use of resources, we distributed:

  • 900 kg of beans (6 bags of 150 kg)
  • 1,250 kg of corn flour (50 bags of 25 kg)
  • 260 litres of vegetable oil (13 cans of 20 litres)
  • 20 kg of table salt (2 boxes of 10 kg)

These staples ensured that families, many of whom had been forced to flee their homes, had access to nutritious meals during a time of great uncertainty.

A Well-Organised Effort

The food distribution took place at the Tumaini/Hope school complex, a fitting location symbolising resilience and new beginnings. The process was carried out in multiple stages to ensure fair and efficient distribution:

  1. Identifying and registering the most vulnerable families.
  2. Transporting food supplies to the distribution site.
  3. Providing the food directly to those in need based on pre-established lists.
  4. Concluding the event with a full report to ensure transparency and accountability.

The Impact of Your Generosity

This initiative brought immediate relief to those who have endured unimaginable hardship. For many families, the food provided not only sustenance but also a reminder that they are not forgotten. Your generosity made this possible.

Thank You for Being Part of the Solution

At World In Need, we believe in the power of collective action. Your donations—no matter how big or small—enable us to respond to crises and offer practical help where it's needed most. Together, we are bringing hope to communities like Goma. Thank you for standing with us in this mission of love and compassion.

If you’d like to continue supporting life-changing work like this, donate today and be part of the more stories of hope.

Hope for the Future

Efforts toward a political resolution are underway. The DRC government and M23 rebels plan to hold their first direct talks on 9 April in Doha, Qatar, aiming to address the ongoing conflict. Additionally, the M23 rebels have agreed to a ceasefire with African coalition peacekeepers from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), who are set to withdraw from the region.

Given the volatile situation, Goma remains a high-risk area. The combination of active conflict, humanitarian crises, and reports of human rights violations contribute to an environment of significant danger for residents and aid workers alike. Please join with us in praying for a peaceful outcome of the talks, and an end to this humanitarian crisis with God's protection and provision for the people of the DRC.
