The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the largest country in Sub-Saharan Africa and its capital, Kinshasa - located on the Congo River, is the largest city in central Africa. Following decades of fighting from a civil war, the country now has more than 5.2 million people internally displaced with many people suffering human rights atrocities. Although the DRC is endowed with exceptional natural resources in minerals, hydropower potential and arable land, as well as the world's second-largest rainforest, poverty remains widespread and pervasive. Please pray for the leadership to provide exceptional care for its people and grow in wisdom in harnessing the beauty and potential of this land.
It is in this context that World in Need run two schools, catering for almost 700 primary and secondary school children between them. The Hope and Grace schools consist of orphans and vulnerable children who are given free education. Children with malnutrition are given a cup of porridge or a plate of food and health treatment. Please pray that teachers can get a regular salary and the children have enough food to eat.
To assist and encourage women in business the WIN staff work through a variety of programmes in the DRC. After many struggles a number of women have had the chance to learn tailoring skills, while others are taught how to successfully work the land and rear animals, especially goats which are considered a sign of wealth. Still others are taught business skills to work their market stalls. Bringing in between £10 - £20 they are encouraged to save £1 per week. Disabled women often use bikes for transport to help them run their small businesses, these are often vital for them to continue earning an income.
Please pray for these ladies and their business endeavours as most are widows and are the sole breadwinners for their families. Please also pray for the ladies to be able to afford to buy their own sewing machines and bikes for those that need them. Also pray for the abundance of water which is lacking in the villages.
Please pray for the following two families:
In June 2021, Esther's mother, Neema, passed away leaving four children. Please pray for Esther who needs a prosthetic leg and a crutch to walk.
Josephine, mother of Celestin, Glody, Gulin and Gracia, recently passed away after delivering a child. Their father has also passed away. Please pray that the children in this family can access school education and the nutrition programme.
There are a number of ways you can provide financial assistance to the people of the DRC if you are able:
Sponsor a child living in the DRC through our Child Sponsorship Programme.
Strategic sponsorship of a school teacher or the global family leader can be done through our Strategic Sponsorship page.
Or through donating to our Feeding Programme, where just £5 will feed two children for a month.
