New school opens in northern Uganda

New school at World in Need Northern Uganda

Eighteen months ago, our Head of World in Need Northern Uganda, Revd. George, realised the need for a new nursery and primary school in Acimi, a village near Lira. The nearest school at that time was 3km away, over difficult terrain, and much too far for little children to walk.

George set to in his own inimitable way. He galvanised the community and set them to work, making bricks and building the school. The first classrooms were like Dutch barns, with roofs but no walls, but that was enough to open the school. 100 children came to study in those classrooms, using text books George had borrowed from other schools. There were no exercise books, pens or other equipment, but it was a start.

Today, thanks to George’s passion and energy, the school is built. Named “Jesus is the way”, it caters for nursery age children who come daily, and primary school children who are able to board. There’s still no money to buy equipment but the children do have access to an education, which is a huge step in the right direction.

If you’d like to know more about the school, or our other work in northern Uganda, please get in touch. We’ll be happy to answer your questions.

If you'd like to support the school, or sponsor a child there, you can call our office on 01892 669834, and speak to our Child Sponsorship Team.
