Today, we celebrate the incredible achievement of one of our sponsorship students, Abedulefeta Munire, who has triumphed against the odds to graduate with a degree in Software Engineering from Jimma University!
Abedulefeta’s journey began in challenging circumstances. Growing up in a modest home in Ethiopia, he lived with his parents and four siblings. His father worked as a labourer, taking on physically demanding jobs for a meagre wage, while his mother washed clothes for neighbours to earn what little she could. Despite their tireless efforts, the family struggled to make ends meet. Often, they were faced with tough decisions—whether to pay rent for their small, overcrowded house or cover the cost of school fees and materials for their children.
When Abedulefeta was five years old, his family’s situation seemed bleak. The cost of education was an unachievable dream for them. It was at this critical time that he joined the World in Need sponsorship programme, which became a lifeline for his future. With support from his sponsor, Abedulefeta was able to attend nursery school—a simple opportunity that changed the trajectory of his life.
From a young age, Abedulefeta showed great promise in school. However, like many children from low-income families, the odds were stacked against him. In Ethiopia, only 35% of children are able to continue their education beyond the primary level, with poverty often forcing them to drop out to work or support their families. Yet, thanks to the continued support of his sponsor, Abedulefeta was able to stay in school and excel. As he progressed, he discovered a natural aptitude for technical subjects, developing a particular interest in IT system development and software programming.
Against all odds, Abedulefeta achieved what once seemed impossible: he earned a place at Jimma University, one of Ethiopia’s most respected institutions. Life at university was far from easy—balancing rigorous coursework with the financial pressures of living away from home. Yet, he persevered, driven by his dreams and the unwavering belief of his sponsor in his potential.
This past July, Abedulefeta’s years of hard work paid off when he graduated with a degree in Software Engineering, a major milestone for both him and his family. Reflecting on his journey, he shared these heartfelt words with his sponsor:
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your unconditional selflessness, your unwavering support, your countless sacrifice that have opened many doors for me to grow and succeed, and all of the little and big things you have taught me along the way. I hope I make you as proud as you make me. All this success would not have happened without you, so let’s celebrate this big achievement.”
Today, Abedulefeta is ready to embrace the next chapter of his life. With his CV polished and applications submitted, he is eager to begin a career that will not only change his future but also uplift his family and community. His story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when opportunity meets determination.
