The Philippines is a republic made up of 7,250 separate islands. 700 of these are inhabited, and the bulk of the population live on just eleven of them. The capital city is Manila, on Luzon Island. Other major cities include Quezon City, Davao, Cebu and Baguio, which is where World In Need has its base.

Over 75% of the land is made up of mountains, and the climate is tropical. The area is prone to devastating typhoons. From 1565 to 1898, the country was a Spanish colony, which led to Catholicism being the major religion. The USA then ruled from 1898 until independence in 1946.

The Catholic Church wields enormous influence, but there is freedom of religion. A Muslim minority on Mindanao, the southernmost and poorest of the islands, wishes to set up an independent Muslim state. This has led to conflict which has decimated that island.

The official language is Filipino, which is based on Tagalog, and English is also widely spoken. Education is valued, and most people have been taught at least the basics of literacy.

The economy is a mix of agricultural and industrial but a combination of factors, including high population growth, government corruption, protectionism, social and political unrest, and natural disasters have played havoc, causing widespread poverty and unemployment. The gap between rich and poor is massive. There are also high levels of crime, a lack of foreign investment, and the fall-out from the zero tolerance policies of President Duterte, which have damaged confidence.

The economy relies on electronics exports, business outsourcing and tourism, but remittance from Filipinos working abroad have also been crucial.

More than 30% of the population lives below the international poverty line, meaning they earn less than US$1.90 per day.

We have a number of projects in the Philippines that need support:

  • The school needs support
  • More children need sponsoring
  • Cambiare café needs support to provide vocational training
  • Cambiare Kabataan music programme helps young people learn musical instruments and grow confidence
  • Bible teaching and mission need support
